Zachary
Zuck(Tsuk) was born in Konnig, Ost Prussia and was a German
trained classical historian. He came to the United States in
1839 and in 1840 married Miss Christy Ann Walker daugter of
Colonel R. W. Walker of Walker's Mill, Georgia. After the
conclusion of the Civil War, he followed his wife's family
to Mexico. In 1868, she died. Soon after, Mr. Zuck left
Mexico and settled near Calhoun. In 1870, several local
people approached Mr. Zuck about lectures. By 1871, Mr. Zuck
began to accept applications for his private academy which
latter became known as The American Freedom College.
During the
tenure of Mr. Zuck, the academy constructed the Library and
Classroom Building in 1878. By the time of his death in
1884, the academy employed five faculty members and
graduated 34 students the year before he died. As Mr. Zuck
had no heirs, the school was his personal property. In
accordance with his will, his estate was turned over to a
Board of Governors to manage. The college still operates
under that framework to this day. |
